Automating Resilience: Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Practice

The June NPA hands-on virtual workshop equips IT/Networking professionals with practical, immediately applicable skills for designing and automating cloud-based disaster recovery (DR) solutions using free, publicly available tools and platforms.

In an era where downtime is measured in dollars and trust, resilience is no longer optional. Participants will move beyond theory and into practice, working through real configurations, automation scripts, and recovery scenarios that mirror the challenges faced in production environments.

From understanding foundational DR concepts to executing automated failover simulations, this workshop is structured to build both confidence and competence. Whether you are new to cloud-based DR or looking to formalize and automate what you already have in place, this session delivers a clear, repeatable framework that you can carry back to your organization and begin applying the next day.

Learning Objectives:

• Distinguish between key disaster recovery concepts including RTO, RPO, failover, and replication, and explain how they inform architectural decisions
• Identify free-tier cloud tools and open-source resources suitable for building and testing a DR environment
• Design a basic cloud-based DR architecture using available free-tier services
• Implement automated backup and recovery configurations using infrastructure-as-code and scripting tools
• Execute a simulated failover scenario and evaluate the results against defined RTO and RPO targets Identify gaps, document lessons learned, and apply a continuous improvement mindset to DR planning
